Accra Zoo opens for public – Land Minister announces

Samuel Abu Jinapor, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources announced that the Accra Zoo is now open for public use after months of closure.
The Accra Zoo was open for the general public on Friday, 9th December 2022 after putting all the necessary measures in place needed to guide and save lives.
The Accra Zoo months (since August) was in the news for its current state and an attack by a Lion caused by an intruder hence was closed under the command of the Minister.
The Minister at the ceremony assured the security of all persons willing to visit the Zoo.
“The Accra Zoo, I can assure you is safe and you are all warmly welcome to visit,” He assured.
He also said the Zoo was under maintenance before the sad news occurred. During the closure of the Zoo, massive works have been done to bring back the joy and safe use of the Zoo before and after the closure.
Samuel Jinapor in his speech urged all Ghanaians both home and the diaspora to patronise the Zoo as the festive season approaches.
“As we approach the festive season, I want to encourage all of us, both Ghanaians and foreigners alike and particularly our dear students to patronise and interact with nature,” he encouraged.
Speaking on ecotourism promotion, the Minister also announced and asked for partnership from private sectors so that all hands can make the Zoo safe and promote the intended agenda of the government in Ecotourism.
Mr. John Alottey the Chief Executive Officer of the Forest Commission disclosed some developments that have been added to the Zoo after the closure.
He mentioned that they have now installed camera traps at the den of the Lion for checks and security reasons, and higher cages including strong iron gates which for security reasons also.
For the comfort of visitors, the visitor’s lounge which has benches has been constructed, and the installation of street lights and access routes are now part of the Zoo.
Additionally, the lion’s enclosure now has checkpoints for frequent monitoring against intruders and happenings that might take time to notice and rescue.
