Africa Education Watch urges limit on Ghana teacher licensure exam re-sits

Africa Education Watch, an education think tank, is advocating for a restriction on the number of attempts a candidate can make to pass the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination.

This call comes in response to the recent revelation by the National Teaching Council that some of the 6,000 candidates who failed the 2023 re-sit examination had already attempted the exam nine times in the past.

Kofi Asare, the Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, emphasized the significance of the Licensure Examination in elevating professional teaching standards.

e stated, “The policy is a great one, and it is a means of separating the boys from the men, for want of a better word, and ensuring that teachers who lack the minimum competence to teach, despite holding their degrees, are not permitted to teach.” Asare further suggested that the National Teaching Council should establish a limit on the number of resit attempts, proposing that a maximum of three resits should be allowed.

Additionally, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) is joining the conversation and urging stakeholders to engage in dialogue to identify gaps and propose solutions to address the persistently high failure rates witnessed year after year.

GNAT stresses the importance of a national dialogue involving all relevant regulatory bodies to determine the root causes of the issue and find effective resolutions. It is emphasized that maintaining the status quo is not an acceptable approach.

The push for limiting re-sit attempts and engaging in stakeholder discussions reflects the collective effort to improve the quality of teaching and address the ongoing challenges faced in the education sector.
