The three Tongu Enclaves (North Tongu, South Tongu, and Central Tongu) all in the Volta Region of Ghana are heavily flooded following the heavy spillage from Akosombo Dam last night.

The spillage currently affected a number of communities in the area including but not limited to Battor-Dugame, Mepe and its adjoining communities, Volo, Battor-Wugodzi, Memordzi, Sikor community, Sogakope, Awadiwoekome among others.

The affected individuals are currently homeless. The communities, including islands are in a state of being submerged as the spillage continues.

Farmlands, livestock, and farm produces were damaged by the spillage posing the people at risk and famine. The situation, if not addressed in time may lead to a serious threat to life and destruction of major properties.

The residents of the affected communities are appealing to the government through the Volta River Authority (VRA), National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), the District Chief Executives of the three District Assemblies in Tongu, Members of Parliament for North Tongu, South Tongu and Central Tongu, Philanthropist to quickly come to their aid.

Earlier, the Member of Parliament for Central Tongu Constituency, Hon. Alexander Gabby Hottordze paid an emergency visit to the flood victims of an island around Awadiwoekome in the Central Tongu Constituency.

His visit became necessary due to the recent spillage of the Akosombo Dam, the island has been submerged, which led to the destruction of the properties of the residents. He initially assisted the victims to be temporarily moved to Bakpa-Alavanyo.

He sympathized with the victims of his Constituency and also promised to mobilize some resources (financial and materials) for them to ameliorate their plights temporarily whilst considering long-term measures to avert future occurrences.

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu Honourable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa also addressed the issue while speaking to TV3 in the early hours of Wednesday, 11th October, 2023.

He used the platform to call on VRA, NADMO, and the government to immediately put resources together to combat the issue.
