Barry John was a Welsh rugby union fly-half who played during the amateur era of the sport in the 1960s and early 1970s.
When John was a kid, he played rugby for his local team, Cefneithin RFC, until 1964, when he moved to play for the premier West Wales team, Llanelli RFC. John was chosen for the Wales national team while he was still at Llanelli, taking David Watkins’ spot in order to play a visiting Australian squad.
John moved from Llanelli RFC to Cardiff RFC in 1967, when he teamed up with Gareth Edwards to create one of the most renowned half-back combinations in rugby history. John and Edwards became an unbreakable team with rugby selectors in 1967, when they were picked to play together for Cardiff, Wales, the Barbarians, and the British Lions on their 1968 tour of South Africa. John’s trip came to an early stop in the first Test match against the South African national team due to a fractured collarbone.
