Professor Effah Elsie Kaufmann: Who is Professor Effah Elsie Kaufmann? 

Professor Effah Elsie Kaufmann is a renowned Biomedical Engineer and Senior Lecturer. She is widely recognized as the Quiz Mistress of Ghana’s National Science and Maths Quiz Television Program and is the Founding Head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Ghana, Legon.

Professor Effah Elsie Kaufmann: Education

• Professor Effah Elsie Kaufmann attended her primary education in the same town.
• She attended Aburi Girls’ Senior High School, where she studied General Science.
• In 1988, she was granted a scholarship to pursue an International Baccalaureate Diploma at the United World College (UWC) of the Atlantic in Wales.
• Following her time at UWC, Prof. Elsie obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering (BSE) from the University of Pennsylvania. With a passion for academia, she continued her studies at the same institution and completed a Master of Science in Engineering (MSc.E).

• Remaining at the University of Pennsylvania, Prof. Kaufmann pursued her Ph.D. while also working as a Teaching Assistant in the Department of Biomedical Engineering.
• After completing her doctorate, Prof. Elsie underwent postdoctoral training at Rutgers University in the United States. She served as a research supervisor at the Department of Chemistry before joining the University of Ghana in 2001.
• In 2006, Prof. Elsie began hosting the widely acclaimed National Science and Maths Quiz.
• She made history as the first woman to be appointed as the head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Ghana, Legon, leading the department from 2006 to 2012 and again from 2014 to 2016.

Contributions of Professor Effah Elsie Kaufmann

Alongside her teaching role, Prof. Elsie has contributed in various capacities at the University.

• She was a member of the University of Ghana’s Planning Committee, which was established by the Academic Board to facilitate the establishment of the Faculty of Engineering Sciences.
• She served as a member of the three-person Implementation Committee appointed by the university’s Vice-Chancellor.
• Prof. Elsie represented the non-professorial academic staff on the University Council of the University of Ghana for a four-year term.
• She serves as a Board member of the British International School, Ghana, and the African Gifted Foundation Ghana (African Science Academy).
• Currently, Prof. Kaufmann holds several significant positions. She is the President of the Ghana Society of Biomedical Engineers, the Quiz Mistress of Ghana’s National Science and Maths Quiz Television Program, and an Associate Professor at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Ghana, Legon.

Professor Effah Elsie Kaufmann is a daughter of educators. Her father, Yusuf K. Effah served as the headmaster of T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School, Kumasi, and later, Director of Education in the Western Region.
