Dana Bruce Barros is a former National Basketball Association player from the United States. He attended Boston College and graduated as one of the school’s all-time leading scorers. In Massachusetts, he was the head men’s basketball coach at Newbury College.
Barros was a four-year starter at Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood, Massachusetts, where he scored 1,821 points, including a tournament-record 57 points against Needham. In an era before the 3-point shot, the 1985 Catholic Conference MVP and Boston Globe All Scholastic averaged more than 30 points per game during his senior season. He has been inducted into the “Hall of Fame” at Xaverian Brothers High School.
The 5′ 11″ (1.80 m), 165 lb (75 kg) point guard began his professional career in 1989, when the Seattle SuperSonics selected him with the 16th choice in the first round of the NBA draft. Most of his time in Seattle was spent as a backup to point guard Gary Payton, who was considered a far better ball handler and defender than Barros, who was deemed more useful at shooting guard.
The Sonics traded Barros to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for Kendall Gill prior to the 1993-94 season. Charlotte sold Barros, Sidney Green, and their 1993 draft pick, Greg Graham, to the Philadelphia 76ers for Hersey Hawkins two days later.
