Deputy Speaker calls for investigation into UG’s New Residential Policy Following

The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei-Owusu has instructed the Education Committee of the House to investigate the violation of a court order regarding the new residential policy at the University of Ghana.

The above action was prompted by a statement made by Dr. Clement Apaak, the Deputy Ranking Member on the Education Committee, who criticized the policy and called for the affected students to be reinstated.

In his ruling, the First Deputy Speaker stated that the committee should meet with university management to determine their reasons for disregarding the court order.

“The orders of the court are in the interim to hold the balance while the matters are being heard, but my wish is that the settlement will be outside the court that is where we are sure to achieve harmony at the end of it all. I will refer this to the Committee on Education to engage the University and report back to us on why the University hasn’t implemented the directive of the court.”

During the beginning of the academic year at Ghana’s top university, some students were left stranded due to a residential policy that relocated continuing students from Commonwealth and Mensah Sarbah halls to other halls. This policy was introduced due to several clashes that had occurred between the halls in the past.

However, in early January 2023, an Accra High Court issued an injunction order preventing the implementation of the policy. Despite this order, the university denied allegations that it had violated the Court’s ruling.
