Douglas James Burgum is an American entrepreneur, investor, humanitarian, and politician, who has been North Dakota’s 33rd governor since 2016. Burgum, a Republican Party member, previously served as president of Great Plains Software and is presently a candidate in the forthcoming United States presidential election in 2024.
Burgum, who grew up in the small hamlet of Arthur, North Dakota, took a big financial risk after graduating from college in 1983 by leveraging his family farms to invest in Great Plains Software. He effectively changed Great Plains into a thriving software organization after ascending to the position of company president in 1984.
In 2001, he oversaw the company’s sale to Microsoft for an astonishing $1.1 billion. During his time at Microsoft, he was in charge of Microsoft Business Solutions and also served as chairman of the boards of Atlassian and SuccessFactors. Burgum is not only the founder of Kilbourne Group, a Fargo-based real estate development firm, but also one of the co-founders of Arthur Ventures, a venture capital firm focused on software endeavors.
Despite his lifelong residence in North Dakota, Burgum entered the Republican primary for the 2016 North Dakota gubernatorial election with no prior political experience. During the primary, he surprised the long-serving Attorney General and party-endorsed candidate, Wayne Stenehjem.
Doug Burgum then easily defeated Democratic nominee Marvin Nelson in the general election. Burgum’s popularity remained high, allowing him to easily win reelection in 2020. He formally declared his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination 2024 in June 2023, which was a key step.
