Dr. Eric Nkansah appointed as Acting Director-General of GES

President Nana Addo-Dankwa Akufo-Addo has appointed Dr. Eric Nkansah, who is the current Director in charge of Tertiary Education at the Ministry of Education as the acting Director-General of the Ghana Education Service.
The appointment of Dr. Eric Nkansah comes few day after the substantive Director-General of the Ghana Education Service Professor Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa was asked to leave office by the President acting through his secretary Nana Asante Badiatuo.
In a letter dated 19th October, 2022 signed by Mr Nana Badiatuo Asante who is the secretary to the President of the Republic indicated that, Dr. Eric Nkansah has been appointed to act as the head of the Pre-Tertiary education management body.
The appointment of Dr. Eric Nkansah takes effect from 19th October, 2022.

“Pursuant to Section 19 (1), (2) (a) and (b) of the Pre-Tertiary Education Act, 2020 (Act 1049), I am pleased to inform you that the President has appointed you to act as the Director General of the Ghana Education Service (the “Service) pending receipt of the constitutionally required advice of the governing Council of the Service, given in consultation with the Public Services Commission. Your appointment is effective 19h October, 2022.” – A portion of the letter stated.
Dr. Eric Nkansah replaces the former Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) Professor Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa.
Professor Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa’s secondment to the Ghana Education Service (GES) from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) was terminated by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on 17th October, 2022.
According to the Ministry of Education, the exigencies that required the skills and expertise of Prof. Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa as Director-General of the Ghana Education Service do not exist any longer.
Moreover, the extension of his secondment by the 14th June, 2021 letter is in contravention of the Human Resource Policy Framework and Manual of the Public Services Commission, as it purports to extend his secondment beyond the 3-year maximum limit.
Accordingly, the President of the Republic has instructed that Prof. Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa’s secondment be terminated forthwith, and directed him to return to his position at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
