ECG retrieves GH¢675,313.00 from 94 illegal power connections in a week

The Electricity Company of Ghana Ltd. (ECG), in the Accra West Region, has successfully recovered approximately GH¢675,313.00 from 94 customers who were found to have participated in various forms of illegal power connections.
The company ECG let-out that the illicit activities of these customers included meter bypasses, meter tampering, unauthorized service connections, and direct connections.
The individuals were identified during ECG’s comprehensive one-week nationwide revenue mobilization exercise, which took place from May 26th to June 2nd 2023.
They, ECG said the primary objective of the exercise was to retrieve all outstanding debts owed to the company while monitoring the overall condition of meter installations at customer facilities. It was stated that the Accra West region managed to recover 535,822KWh of electricity, equivalent to approximately GH¢675,313.00.
Ing Emmanuel Akinie, the General Manager of ECG Accra West, commended the vigilance and dedication of the field team in uncovering these illegal activities. He emphasized that the identified illegal connections were highly sophisticated, highlighting the determination of some customers to deprive the company of revenue generated from the electricity they consumed.
To address such challenges, “ECG is making substantial investments in technology to enhance its ability to identify customers engaged in illegal activities. A pilot program has already been introduced featuring smart meter solutions that provide real-time updates on customer premises. These smart meters promptly notify ECG if the meter casing is opened, bypassed, or tampered with.”
Ing. Akinie further revealed plans to expand the implementation of smart meters to combat illegal power connections effectively.
The Accra West region comprises eight operational districts, namely Ablekuma, Achimota, Amasaman, Bortianor, Dansoman, Kaneshie, Korlebu, and Nsawam.
