Education Expert Advocates for Structured Training and Mentorship for Future School Leaders

Wisdom Koudjo Klu, an experienced educationist, has emphasized the importance of systematic training and mentorship for teachers aiming for headship positions in the Ghana Education Service.

He pointed out the deficiencies in the training provided to incoming headteachers and proposed a hands-on leadership development approach that could be integrated within schools.

Klu recommends that, in lieu of official headship training programs, current headteachers should implement a mentorship model.

This approach would require them to frequently share their management experiences with the teaching staff and assign leadership tasks to teachers on a weekly basis, giving them the opportunity to practice decision-making and administrative roles.

Headteachers would then provide oversight and feedback to these teachers, helping them to develop crucial leadership capabilities.

“This strategy would not only prepare upcoming leaders but would also facilitate a more seamless transition in leadership, positively affecting our schools,” Klu stated.

He pointed out that by encouraging practical learning experiences, the Ghana Education Service could effectively cultivate a new wave of school leaders equipped to address the complex challenges in educational management.

Klu’s suggestions contribute to the ongoing dialogue regarding the significance of school leadership in achieving educational excellence and highlight the urgent need for proactive measures to equip teachers for headship roles.
