Failure of teachers in Licensure Exams causes financial loss to the state -GNAT

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has called for a national dialogue of stakeholders to address the mass failure of prospective teachers in the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE).
According to Thomas Musah, the General Secretary of GNAT, the failure of the teachers is a “financial loss to the state” given the significant investment made in their training. Out of the 7,728 prospective teachers who sat for the licensure examination in May this year, only 1,277 passed, leaving 6,481 teachers to fail. This represents 16.5 percent of the candidates who sat for the examination, which was introduced to license teaching practitioners.
The Registrar of the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE), Dr. Christian Addai-Poku, explained that all the candidates had sat for the exam at least twice, with some sitting as many as nine times.
He added that those affected would have one more chance to re-write the exam later in the year before its format and content changed. However, candidates who fail at their last chance and wish to continue re-siting the exam must have a first degree.
GNAT has deemed the situation unacceptable, considering the amount of investment made in training the teachers and the many empty classrooms across the country.
It is hoped that the national dialogue of stakeholders will produce a solution to the issue of mass failure in the GTLE and ensure that qualified teachers are available to teach in the country.
