Fred Davis Chappell was a novelist and poet. He spent forty years teaching English at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro. From 1997 to 2002, he served as North Carolina’s Poet Laureate. He was a student at Duke University.

His 1968 novel Dagon, a psychologically realistic Southern Gothic retelling of a Cthulhu Mythos horror story, won the Académie française’s Best Foreign Book of the Year award.

Among his literary honors are the T. S. Eliot Award, the Prix du Meilleur Livre Étranger, the Bollingen Prize, and the Aiken Taylor Award for Modern American Poetry.
