GES prohibits skin bleaching in SHSs in a new code of conduct

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has recently introduced a new nationwide code of conduct aimed at promoting discipline and creating a favorable learning environment in Senior High Schools (SHSs) across the country. One of the key provisions of this code is a ban on skin bleaching among students.
The section of the code titled “Improper Dressing” explicitly addresses the issue of skin bleaching, stating that it shall not be allowed. The GES views this ban as a step towards discouraging unhealthy beauty practices and promoting positive body image among students.
However, the regulations outlined in the code go beyond the ban on skin bleaching. They cover various aspects of student appearance and conduct. Students are required to dress neatly and consistently adhere to prescribed attire and footwear.
The code also provides specific guidelines regarding the use of accessories such as chains, bangles, caps, braces, and even spectacles. Spectacles can only be worn with a valid medical prescription, and any alterations to school uniforms or dress are strictly prohibited.
According to the Code of Conduct, students are not allowed to wear chains, bangles, caps, or braces. Wearing spectacles is permitted only with a medical prescription. Possessing or using unprescribed attire is considered an offense.
Personal grooming is another aspect addressed in the guidelines. The code emphasizes the importance of maintaining a decent haircut as defined by the school authorities. Students are encouraged to have clean, neat, and modest hair, avoiding extreme styles and colors. Male students are expected to have a well-groomed haircut and a clean-shaven beard.
Sanctions for violating the code include confiscation of bleaching cream and other prohibited items, appearing before a disciplinary committee, and signing a bond. For improper dressing offenses, students may receive a verbal caution, counseling, manual work, demotion for prefects, two weeks of internal suspension, or shaving of beards or sideburns under the supervision of a housemaster.
