GES to implement National Professional Learning Community (PLC) sessions in Senior High Schools

The Ghana Education Service (GES) is taking steps to introduce Professional Learning Community (PLC) sessions in all Senior High Schools (SHS) and Senior High Technical Schools (SHTS) across Ghana.
This initiative aims to strengthen teachers’ understanding of and adherence to the National Teachers’ Standards (NTS) in preparation for the upcoming implementation of the new secondary education curriculum in the 2024/25 academic year.
A dedicated National Training Team, comprising representatives from GES, T-TEL, Senior High Schools, and Colleges of Education, has undergone a comprehensive five-day training program. This training is crucial to ensure the effective institutionalization and nationwide implementation of PLC sessions in 726 schools.
The GES highlighted that these weekly PLC sessions have been successfully piloted in 12 SHS and SHTS since 2022, utilizing structured handbooks developed in collaboration with the National Teaching Council (NTC).
Led by the GES, the training received valuable support from Professor Jonathan Fletcher, Key Advisor for Teaching and Learning Partnerships at T-TEL.
Professor Fletcher expressed the intention to utilize these sessions to assist teachers in creating enjoyable learning environments that recognize the diverse needs of learners and promote their personal development, regardless of any learning challenges they may face.
The weekly PLC sessions, facilitated by trained teachers within each school, aim to ensure that all educators are well-versed in the National Teachers’ Standards (NTS).
They will also focus on incorporating essential concepts related to Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI), Information and Communication Technology (ICT), and Social & Emotional Learning (SEL) into classroom practices.
Mr. Robin Todd, the Executive Director of T-TEL, emphasized that the successful implementation of the new secondary education curriculum greatly depends on the effective execution of weekly PLC sessions in schools, supported by the dedicated training teams.
