Ghana Revenue Authority launches investigation into Sogakope Customs checkpoint shooting incident

Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has launched an investigation into the Sogakope Customs checkpoint shooting incident.

The unfortunate shooting incident happened at the Sogakope Customs checkpoint occured on February 19, 2025, which left a bystander injured.

Fastforward on February 20, 2025, the Authority issued an official release assuring the public that a full investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The GRA in the statement also expressed sympathy for those affected and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all stakeholders.

Further, the statement according to GRA disclosed that the Customs officers at the checkpoint received intelligence about a suspected uncustomed Mercedes-Benz E350 sedan being smuggled into Ghana from Togo. As officers attempted to intercept the vehicle, the occupants abandoned it and fled.

In an effort to stop them, the officers fired warning shots, but a bystander was reportedly hit by a stray bullet a few meters from the checkpoint. The injured individual was rushed to the Sogakope Comboni Hospital and is currently responding to treatment, the GRA confirmed.

While emphasizing its role in prote.cting national revenue and securing Ghana’s borders, the GRA pledged to take the necessary steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.
