GNAT headquarters donates life jackets to teachers in island schools in Volta Region
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Headquarters has donated life jackets to teachers in island schools in Volta Region.
Coverghana can report that, the Association has donated a total of two hundred and fifty-one (251) life jackets to island schools in six (6) districts in the region.
You will recall that on April 27, 2023, it was in the news that, a teacher, the late Sampson Adu of Chinekope M/A Primary School who doubled as the Basic School Rep. for Kete Island Local GNAT got drowned in the Volta Lake on his way back to School from Kete-Krachi, the Capital of Krachi West Municipality.
A search party was immediately organized but it took 72 hours before the body was retrieved, almost in a decomposed State.
The Krachi West Municipal Education Directorate Officially wrote to GES Headquarters about the unfortunate incident whilst the District GNAT Leadership also wrote to GNAT Headquarters through the Volta Regional GNAT Secretariat.
It is refreshing to note that exactly two months after the incident, GNAT Headquarters brought 251 pieces of life jackets to GNAT VOLTA for distribution to its members in Six (6) GNAT Districts for a start at a program held at Kudorkope, an island community in the Krachi East Municipality.

Mr Vincent Appiah mentioned that in 2022, during the National Officers Tour to the Volta Region, GNAT Headquarters donated life jackets to Krachi East, and Nkwanta GNAT Districts.
While commending GNAT Headquarters for constantly putting the welfare of its members on the priority list, he chastised the Ghana Education Service for not honouring its side of the Collective Agreement for its Staff.
He therefore called on the employer to provide the necessary logistics periodically for its employees for effective delivery of teaching and learning.
After a brief ceremony, the National President of GNAT, Rev. Isaac Owusu, on behalf of the National Executives and National Council presented 251 life Jackets to Volta GNAT for onward distribution to teachers in the island communities in 6 GNAT Districts in the Region.
Thereafter, he admonished the teachers to consciously wear the life jackets for their safety. He bemoaned that it is better to wear the uncomfortable life jackets and be alive than not to wear and lose one’s life.
In appreciation, the chief on behalf of his elders and the entire Kudorkope Community expressed their gratitude and appreciation to GNAT for selecting their Community for this timely intervention.

The Municipal Director of Education’s Rep. also expressed their profound gratitude to GNAT Headquarters for coming to the aid of teachers who cross Rivers, Lakes and Streams to render their services in these deprived Communities.
The General Secretary on his part, commended the staff of Kudorkope Community M/A Basic School and teachers in other islands Communities for accepting Postings to these Communities and for their Commitment towards the development of the young ones on the Island.
He also called on the Ghana Education Service and the Government to provide the necessary logistics and working gear for teachers in the deprived areas as well as on the Islands.

In attendance were the National President of GNAT – Rev. Isaac Owusu, the General Secretary of GNAT – Mr Thomas Tanko Musah, Mr Samuel Mawuena Cody – the Head in-charge of Youth and membership Education of GNAT Headquarters, the Volta Regional Secretary – Chief Seidu Baba Kassim.
The Regional Vice Chairman – Mr Ayuba Aguda deputizing for the Volta Regional Chairman, Madam Egbetorhia Nunana Vasty – the Volta Regional Rep. to National Executive who doubles as the Chair-Person for membership Education Committee, National Headquarters, Messers Emmanuel Kwaboni and Emmanuel Quarshie – IT Department, GNAT Headquarters, Mr Forson Manu – the Chief Inspector of Schools, Krachi East Municipality who stood in for the Municipal Director of Education.
