GNAT Increases Cancer Fund Contribution from GH₵5 to GH₵10

Delegates at the 7th Quadrennial (54th) National Delegates Conference of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) have approved an increase in the GNAT Cancer Fund contribution from ₵5.00 to ₵10.00 following a competitive vote involving two separate motions.

The decision was taken at the conference at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), where delegates from across the country met to deliberate on critical welfare and policy matters affecting teachers nationwide.

Conference records indicate that two motions were formally presented before the house. The first motion proposed an increase in the Cancer Fund contribution from ₵5 to ₵10, while the second motion sought a more substantial increase from ₵5 to ₵20.

In accordance with GNAT’s democratic procedures, delegates voted on the motions through a secret ballot to ensure fairness, transparency, and confidentiality. At the close of voting and counting, the results showed that 358 delegates voted in favour of the ₵10 increment, while 263 delegates supported the ₵20 increment. Additionally, seven (7) ballots were rejected.

By securing the majority of valid votes, the motion to increase the Cancer Fund contribution to ₵10 was duly adopted by the conference and will take effect in line with GNAT’s implementation guidelines.

Delegates who supported the ₵10 increment cited concerns about affordability and member burden, while proponents of the ₵20 proposal argued for a stronger and more robust fund capable of offering enhanced financial support to members battling cancer. Despite the differing views, the conference commended the orderly conduct of the voting process and the maturity displayed by delegates.

The resolution is regarded as one of the key welfare decisions of the 7th Quadrennial Conference and reflects GNAT’s continued commitment to safeguarding the health and wellbeing of its members.

Further resolutions and policy directions are expected to emerge as the conference progresses.
