GNAT urges action to safeguard against future teacher licensure exam failures

The General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Thomas Musah, emphasizes the urgent need to identify the underlying issues contributing to the mass failure in this year’s Teacher Licensure Examination. In order to prevent such occurrences in the future, he suggests bringing together all stakeholders for a national dialogue on the matter.
Describing the situation as a national crisis, Musah asserts that the responsibility cannot solely rest with the National Teaching Council. Therefore, he advocates for collective involvement in addressing the problem.
By fostering open discussions and collaborative efforts among stakeholders, the aim is to pinpoint the gaps in the examination system and develop lasting solutions. Musah firmly believes that by next year, significant progress can be achieved, estimating that 60 to 70 percent of the identified issues can be rectified.
Expressing his concern over the disturbing examination results, Musah highlights the need for immediate action. In an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, he further emphasizes that failure to address the situation promptly could have severe consequences for Ghana’s human capital over the next 18 years.
He also emphasizes that the failure of over 6,000 candidates has implications for future employment opportunities within the Ghana Education Service. The inability to secure teaching positions due to licensure exam failure may potentially lead to teacher shortages.
Additionally, he raises concerns about the investment made in these teachers, as some of them were supported through trainee allowances, which now seem to have been in vain.
