GNPC offers scholarship to brilliant student forced into Galamsey

The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has offered a full educational scholarship to Stephen Koomson, a 21-year-old former student of Mpohor Senior High School in the Western Region.

Koomson’s dreams of pursuing higher education were halted due to financial constraints, forcing him to turn to palmwine tapping and illegal mining , or galamsey, to support himself and his family.

Despite facing these challenges, Koomson achieved an impressive 5As and 3Bs in the 2021 West African School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

His story caught the attention of the media, highlighting the issues faced by many young people across Ghana who are unable to pursue their dreams due to financial difficulties.

The GNPC’s scholarship offer has now given Koomson the opportunity to pursue his dream of becoming a lawyer at the University of Ghana in the next academic year.

This announcement has been welcomed by many, who see it as a chance to uplift and support the country’s youth.
