Government reduces Teacher Trainees’ Allowance Component

The government has reduced the Teacher Trainees’ allowance component due them every month. 

The update for this crucial development, the reduction of Teacher Trainees’ allowance was announced by the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Teacher Trainees’ Association of Ghana (TTAG) in a release dated 24th July 2023.

After much anticipation, it has been confirmed that the allowance payment will be disbursed this week, providing much-needed relief to eligible Teacher Trainees.

As part of the arrangement, eligible Trainees will receive the allowance for three (3) months easing the financial burden they have been facing during their training period.

NEC expressed its gratitude to all Teacher Trainees for their patience, commitment, and unwavering support throughout the fight for the reinstatement of the allowances.

INITIAL TEACHER TRAINEE ALLOWANCE AMOUNT 

Earlier, every eligible Teacher Trainee is entitled to GH¢400.00 per month in every semester of an academic year. SLTF receives and disburses GH¢204.00.

The said amount is disbursed as follows:

Out of the GH¢204.00, they pay GH¢200.00 directly to the student’s e-zwich account for withdrawal.

The GH¢4.00 is paid to TTAG as dues. The remaining GH¢196.00 is paid directly to the Principals of the various Colleges of Education (CoE) to cater for feeding and other expenses on behalf of the students.

However, in the latest development, the NEC has been notified of a slight reduction in the allowance amount. The allowance component of Trainees has been adjusted to GH¢ 149.00 from GH¢204.00 due to a decision made based on a request from the Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF) to the Ministry of Education (MoE) last academic year.

REASON FOR TEACHER TRAINEE ALLOWANCE REDUCTION

According to the request, the reduction is aimed at supplementing the feeding of Trainees and will be effective from this academic year onwards. While this may come as a minor setback, the NEC remains dedicated to advocating for the welfare of Teacher Trainees and striving for the best possible outcomes in their interest.

The Association acknowledges the importance of financial support for Trainees during their training, and the reduction in the allowance amount has been carefully considered in the context of improving overall support and services provided to Trainees.

They also extended their appreciation to all Teacher Trainees for their resilience and determination, and they remain steadfast in their pursuit of securing the best possible outcomes for the benefit of all trainees in the country.
