Green Ghana Day: GES empowers students to promote environmental stewardship
The Director-General of GES, Dr. Eric Nkansah, joined Her Excellency Hajia Samira Bawumia at the Labone Senior High School on June 7, 2024, to commemorate Green Ghana Day.
In his address, Dr. Nkansah emphasised that the most effective way to address the challenges of climate change is through education, training, and public awareness.
GES said they in collaboration with the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), the Forestry Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency, and a host of other stakeholders, has integrated climate change and green economy into the school curricula, at least, at the basic school level.
The Senior High School curriculum review has also been completed and is currently being piloted in some 33 schools across the country. Again, the new SHS curriculum is very well integrated with climate change and green economy issues.
To further build and deepen students’ interest in climate change issues, the Africa Student for Climate Action (ASCA) was launched today. This is an initiative to harness the power of our youth to drive positive change and engage our students in meaningful activities that promote environmental stewardship.
“We are confident that through these integrations, our students will develop a deeper interest in climate change and green economy issues and practices, ultimately impacting our planet positively,” GES added.
“At GES, we teach our learners to appreciate the need to plant and conserve trees, use solar energy, recycle organic waste, and garden. This makes them more curious about their environment.”
Together with some students, the dignitaries also planted trees to commemorate the Green Ghana Day.
In attendance was the Director in charge of General Administration at the Headquarters, Madam Justina Djabah; the Head of the School Health Education Programme (SHEP) Unit at the Headquarters, Mrs. Theresah Oppong; the Greater Accra Regional Director of Education, Mr Stephen Abamfo, and some Heads and students from some selected Basic and Senior High Schools within the Greater Accra Region.
