Hon. Haruna Iddrisu speaks on GHANASCO toilets turned into accommodation for students

A disturbing video has been circulating on social media, reportedly from the Ghana Senior High School (GHANASCO) in Tamale, alleging that toilet cubicles have been transformed into living quarters for students. If true, the conditions in the video are alarming and unacceptable. As a result, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has initiated an independent investigation to provide assurance to parents and the public about the safety and well-being of students at the school.

While we await the findings of the investigation, it is essential that the government, the GES, and the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) undertake a comprehensive review of the infrastructure requirements and other complementary facilities needed to support effective teaching and learning in schools. The welfare of students should be a top priority, and we must ensure that they have access to safe and conducive learning environments.

As the Member of Parliament for the Tamale South Constituency, I will personally visit GHANASCO to assess the situation and determine what can be done to improve conditions for the students. No child should be forced to live in squalor, and it is our responsibility to create an environment that supports their education and future success.

Education is a fundamental human right, and every child deserves access to quality education in a safe and nurturing environment. We must prioritize the allocation of resources to ensure that our schools have the necessary infrastructure and facilities to provide quality education to our children. Neglecting our children’s education will result in long-term consequences for them and the nation as a whole.

I applaud the GES for launching an independent investigation into this matter. Still, I urge them to take swift and appropriate action to address any shortcomings identified in the investigation’s findings. We cannot allow such a situation to happen again, and we must ensure that our schools provide an environment conducive to learning.

Also, I call on the government, the GES, and the GETFund to take urgent action to address the infrastructure deficit in our schools. The welfare of our students must be a top priority, and we must work together to create an environment that supports their education and future success. Let us commit to building a brighter future for our children and the nation as a whole.
