It is a constitutional mandate for a presidential candidate to designate his or her running mate before filling nomination to contest in a presidential election. About five (5) months left to December 7, 2020 polls, a section of Ghanaians especially some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have been mounting pressure on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and their flagbearer H.E John Dramani Mahama to announce a running mate for the upcoming general elections. A situation that got many peeved because the ruling NPP is yet to elect a presidential candidate for the upcoming controversial elections.

Though the NDC is yet to officially announce running mate, there are speculations about some eight (8) key personalities whose have been shortlisted for Vice Presidential position. The list which was disclosed by Mr. Oscar Yao Doe includes; Professor Joshua Alabi, General Johnson Asiedu Nketia, Hon Marriatta Brew Appiah-Oppong, Hon Dr Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings, Ambassador Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Professor Dr Kwesi Botchwey and Mr. Alex Kofi Mensa Mould

Responding to questions during Joy News PM Express hosted by Mr. Evan Mensah on Coronavirus and 2020 Elections on Wednesday, 20th May, 2020, the Minority Leader Hon. Haruna Iddrisu has disclosed that, he is not fit into the running mate race of the NDC now because, he has not met the criteria. “I do not fit into the geopolitical chemistry as defined by the NDC, and certainly I am not in contention of a running mate.” He disclosed.
When asked by Evans Mensah as to whether he is interested in becoming a president of this great Nation (Ghana) one day, he responded by saying, he do not know about the future but he is counting on Allah’s grace while keeping his eyes on the ball.  “I don’t know about the future and therefore I can’t conjecture into the future, leave it to Allah’s grace.”
The Tamale South Member of Parliament noted that, he is still growing systematically by building his profile on law making and leadership while he keeps his eyes on a presidential race one day. “I am growing systematically, as an MP, Minister, I have been in parliament consecutively and continuously for eight (8) year, that is a huge success, I am now learning law making, and also now learning how to lead as a minority leader and certainly I will have my eyes on the ball” He explained.
