Insufficient infrastructure impedes enrollment at Koforidua School for the Deaf

The Koforidua School for the Deaf and Individuals with Intellectual and Development Disabilities is facing significant challenges due to inadequate infrastructure, which is preventing them from enrolling more special students who have been on a waiting list for an extended period.

The school’s management has highlighted several pressing issues that are hindering the smooth teaching and learning experience. These include the lack of beds in the dormitory, insufficient modern toilet facilities, and shortages of food items.

Morgadzi Daniel Kwami, the Assistant Headmaster of the school, recently disclosed these challenges during a food supply donation event organized by students from the Koforidua Technical University Faculty of Engineering. According to Mr. Kwami, the school urgently requires improved infrastructure to address these obstacles effectively.

“Our students currently use wooden beds, but we desperately need metal beds. Additionally, our vocational department lacks essential equipment, such as sewing machines. The broken fence wall, left unattended for approximately six years, has rendered the premises vulnerable to both humans and animals. Moreover, we require upgraded toilet facilities and additional dormitories to accommodate the current student population and those who are on the waiting list,” he explained.

Mr. Kwami expressed gratitude for any assistance provided by individuals and institutions and extended his appreciation to the students from the Koforidua Technical University Faculty of Engineering for their generous donation.

Dr. Samuel Anim Ofosu, a senior lecturer at the Koforidua Technical University Faculty of Engineering, emphasized the significance of addressing these basic infrastructure needs. He appealed to the government, non-governmental organizations, and corporate entities in Ghana to promptly assist the school.

“I take this opportunity to implore everyone to lend their support. While the government is making efforts, it requires a collective endeavor to empower individuals with special needs, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to society,” Dr. Ofosu added.
