As a native of Lagos in Nigeria, he attended Chrisland School, Opebi, and later enrolled in the taekwondo club formed by the school. He was later discouraged to quit by his mother after he came home with an injured arm. He attended Bells High School in Ota but couldn’t complete it since his family relocated to another place.
The family moved to Ghana in 199 and stayed there for ten months before their parents in search of a better educational foundation for their children decided to relocate again to Rotorua in New Zealand. There, he attended Rotorua Boys High School. As a teenager, Adesanya loved anime and due to bullying in school decided to go back to his lost passion and pursue martial arts. He started kickboxing when he was 19 years old after being inspired by Ong Bak a Thai action movie starring Tony Jaa in 2008.
After High school, Israel Adesanya went to the Universal College of Learning in Whanguai and graduated with a Bachelor degree of Science in Computer Design.
