James William Johnson is an American sports analyst and former football coach. Johnson served as a head football coach on the collegiate level from 1979 to 1988 and in the National Football League for nine seasons.
Johnson’s first head football coaching position was at Oklahoma State before becoming the head football coach at Miami in 1984, where he led the team to a victory in the 1988 Orange Bowl. Johnson succeeded the original Cowboys head coach Tom Landry in 1989, a role that saw him help restore the team back to winning form.
Johnson’s career, which lasted from 1989 to 1993, culminated in the Cowboys winning consecutive Super Bowl victories in Super Bowl XXVII and XXVIII, but disagreements with owner Jerry Jones forced Johnson to leave following the second championship.
