Former British politician John Simon Bercow served as Speaker of the Commons from 2009 to 2019 and as a representative for Buckingham from 1997 to 2019.
Before being chosen for Buckingham in 1997, Bercow served as a councilor in the London Borough of Lambeth from 1986 to 1990.
John Bercow also ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the House of Commons in the general elections of 1987 and 1992. He held positions under Iain Duncan Smith and Michael Howard before being elevated to the Shadow cabinet in 2001. Due to disagreements over his support for the Adoption and Children Act of 2002, Bercow resigned in November 2002. He then came back, but was later kicked out of the Shadow Cabinet in 2004.
In the election to succeed Michael Martin as Speaker following his departure in June 2009, Bercow was elected. He was required to leave the Conservative Party in order to serve as Speaker and to continue to be an independent. At the beginnings of the Parliaments in 2010, 2015, and 2017, he was re-elected without a challenger.[6] As a result, he became both the first Speaker to serve with four Prime Ministers and the first Speaker elected four times since the end of World War II.
Bercow announced in September 2019 that he would step down as Commons Speaker and MP on October 31. He continued to serve in those roles until being named to the Manor of Northstead on November 4, 2019.
