Kpando Dzewoe Youth Foundation hails government’s sanitary pad initiative and advocates for the reduction of import duties on sanitary pads.
In a heartening move, the Kpando Dzewoe Youth Foundation has lauded the government’s decision to include sanitary pads in the national budget. This groundbreaking initiative according to the foundation aims to alleviate the burden of teenage girls who often rely on their male counterparts for sanitary pads, leading to unintended pregnancies.
According to Zikpuitor Frank Gletse, Chairman of the foundation, the issue of menstrual hygiene management has long been a pressing concern in the community. Many young girls from broken homes struggle to afford sanitary pads every month, forcing them to seek help from their peers who engage in commercial motorcycle businesses, popularly known as “Okada.”
To address this challenge, the Kpando Dzewoe Youth Foundation launched the Pad Bank Project in 2022, with the support of the Kairos Rhema Ministry and Foundation. The project provided 750 pieces of sanitary pads to young girls in need, with the goal of replacing them every month through community contributions.
However, the foundation often faced difficulties in replenishing the pads, making the government’s allocation of GH¢292.4 million for sanitary pad distribution a welcome relief. The foundation is eager to see the funds utilized effectively, ensuring that the initiative achieves its intended purpose.

As a next step, the foundation is advocating for the reduction of import duties on sanitary pads. This move would significantly decrease the cost of sanitary pads, making them more affordable and accessible to all young girls in Ghana. By doing so, the foundation aims to make Ghana a model country for affordable menstrual hygiene products in West Africa.
As the Kpando Dzewoe Youth Foundation continues to work towards empowering young girls, they remain committed to breaking the cycle of shame and stigma surrounding menstruation, and creating a brighter future for generations to come.
