GES explains meaning of safe schools and unsafe schools

Management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) in one of its public documents has outlined the meaning of safe schools and unsafe schools.
The document has unveiled certain practices in Ghana schools that make the school environment safe and unsafe for its dwellers.
WHAT IS A SAFE SCHOOL?
According to the Ghana Education Service (GES), a safe school is a school with zero tolerance for any form of violence such as bullying, sexual harassment, corporal punishment and other forms of violence. The GES has stated that all these must be eliminated from schools.
WHAT IS AN UNSAFE SCHOOL?
A school with an unhealthy environment which poses a high risk of discrimination and abuse to children; insensitive and
irresponsive to the needs of persons with disabilities; and where children are not involved and supported in exploring new
interests and are treated unfairly.
The Ghana Education Service further said, at least 51% of children aged 5 to 14 years are exposed to severe physical discipline.
The document again said, almost all children (94%) aged 1 to 14 years reported experiencing a form of violent discipline
The report as crafted from the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS), 2017/18 said, of the age groups, physical punishment is highest among 3 to 4 years and lowest among 10 – 14 years
