Ministry of Education establishes committee to investigate teacher licensure examination failures

In response to the recent widespread failures observed in the Teacher Licensure Examination, the Ministry of Education has formed a committee comprised of seven members to conduct a thorough investigation.

The committee, chaired by Deputy Minister of Education, John Ntim Fordjour, has been given a timeframe of four weeks to complete its investigations and submit a detailed report to the Ministry.

The May 2023 examination saw a total of 7,728 aspiring teachers taking part, but only 1,277 candidates managed to pass. This amounted to a pass rate of 16.5 percent among all the participants.

It is worth noting that all candidates had attempted the examination at least twice, with some individuals attempting it as many as nine times.

The release of the examination results triggered widespread criticism and discontentment regarding the performance of prospective teachers.

Following these failures, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) demanded immediate action to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Africa Education Watch, an Education Think Tank, also joined the call for measures to be taken. They specifically recommended implementing a limit on the number of attempts a candidate can make in order to write the examination.

This proposal aims to ensure that professional teaching standards are elevated and maintained.
