Mrs. Mary Chinery-Hesse Reappointed as Chancellor of University of Ghana

The University of Ghana has recently announced the reappointment of Mrs. Mary Chinery-Hesse as the Chancellor of the institution for a second term of five years. Effective from August 1, 2023, her tenure will extend until July 31, 2028.

Mrs. Chinery-Hesse, who became the first female Chancellor of the University of Ghana in 2018, brings a wealth of experience from her distinguished careers in Ghana’s Civil Service and the United Nations.

Renowned for her expertise in economic and development matters, she is also recognized as a passionate advocate for human and women’s rights, African imperatives, conflict resolution, and mediation.

Throughout her remarkable journey, Mrs. Chinery-Hesse achieved several significant milestones. She holds the distinction of being the first African woman to serve as the Resident Coordinator of the UN System, as well as the first African woman to attain the rank of Under Secretary-General of the United Nations.

In addition to her role as Chancellor, Mrs. Chinery-Hesse has made remarkable contributions in various capacities. Notably, she serves as a Friend of the African Union Panel of the Wise and has previously acted as the Chief Advisor to the President of Ghana.

Her extensive experience includes being a retired Deputy Director-General of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and a former Vice-Chairperson of the National Development Planning Commission.

Mrs. Chinery-Hesse’s notable achievements have earned her prestigious recognition. In 1991, the University of Ghana, her Alma Mater, bestowed upon her an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree, making her the first female graduate of the university to receive such an honor. Additionally, in November 2021, she was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science Degree in Economics by the University of London.
