John Dramani Mahama expressed his disapproval of promoting g@y activities in Ghana, citing his Christian faith as a member of the Assemblies of God Church, which opposes such practices.

Parliament is currently considering legislation on LGBTQ activities in the country through a Private Members’ motion, gaining support from various faith-based organizations. However, the proposed Promotion of Proper Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, also known as the Anti-gay/LGBTQ Bill, has sparked controversy for its perceived draconian measures.

The bill aims to criminalize the promotion, advocacy, funding, and acts of homosexuality, proposing prison terms of up to ten years for LGBTQ+ advocates and three years for individuals identifying as such. Additionally, it seeks to deny health services, including HIV medication, to the LGBTQ community.

During a public forum on Wednesday, 31st January 2024 in Koforidua as part of his ‘Building Ghana Tour,’ the former President highlighted his opposition to LGBTQ, emphasizing that his faith does not support same-sex marriages and gender identity changes. Mahama emphasized the natural creation of man and woman, expressing his personal belief against altering one’s gender arbitrarily.

“My faith as an Assemblies of God member is against LGBTQ. Because the faith I have does not support a man to marry a man and a woman marry a woman,” he indicated.

“I personally believe a man is a man and a woman is a woman. I don’t believe one can get up in a day and opt to change his gender because he feels like, so he’s going to change to become a woman when he has actually been born a man. Nature created us man and woman and God knew what he was doing when he created us like that. So my personal faith is against it,” he noted.
