National Cathedral captured as a flagship program as Government unconstitutionally spent whopping amount of GH¢142,762,500.00 million on the project

The Auditor-General has presented its audit report for the 2021 year ending and the list has made some interesting revelations as the controversial National Cathedral’s expenditure is seen captured as a flagship program by the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s Government.

The issues surrounding the designing and construction of the National Cathedral began in March 2018 with the Akufo-Addo led Government assuring Ghanaians of not funding it solely from the Nation’s coffers but to rather resort to fundraisers in aid of the building.

The cathedral which will be available for National use is expected to have a seating capacity of about 5,000. It will also have other chapels, an art gallery, among others.

This confirmation of expenditure in the Auditor General’s report comes on the back of the Government’s promise of not touching the public purse regarding the project.

According to the report, an amount of over 142 million Ghana cedis has been unconstitutionally spent on the project contrary to what citizens were made to believe.

The said amount was withdrawn from the Consolidated fund without the required parliamentary approval. This revelation has caused tension and made some Ghanaians call out the government by blaming the recent financial crisis in the country on this Cathedral construction project.
