NCA to Launch Shortcode for Verifying SIM Cards Linked to Ghana Cards

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has announced its intention to establish a system that would enable people to verify the number of SIM cards connected to their Ghana Cards. The NCA made this decision because there have been recent reports of unauthorized SIM card connections to people’s Ghana Cards, and many are calling for a simple and common system to verify the numbers linked to their Cards.

The NCA has already engaged with various telecommunication networks to launch a shortcode that will allow subscribers to verify the number of SIM cards linked to their Ghana Cards. This move is expected to enhance the security of personal information and prevent unauthorized SIM card connections.

“The NCA and the Telcos have already been actively working on a short code for Individual Subscribers to verify the number of SIMs associated with a Ghana card; you just type the shortcode on your phone, and after a verification process using your Ghana card pin, the number of SIMs associated with the Ghana card will be displayed.”

According to the NCA, the shortcode will be operational by the end of April, eliminating the need for people to queue at various telecom service centers for verification.

“There will be no need for Subscribers to physically go to the Telco to verify same when the shortcode is operational, by the end of April 2023, after the testing has been completed and approved.”

In October 2021, the Ministry of Communication commenced SIM re-registration, which Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia described as a measure to “eliminate cyber fraud, and monitor and track down individuals who use their mobile devices for criminal activities.”
