NIA POLICY ON REGISTRATION OF GHANAIAN CHILDREN AGED SIX (6) TO FOURTEEN (14) YEARS OLD ONTO THE NATIONAL IDENTITY REGISTER 

(GHANA CARD)

Policy

1. Only named children shall be registered.
2. All first-time registration and issuance of smart Ghana Cards to Ghanaian children aged six (6) to 14 years in Ghana shall be free, except for registrations that take place at premium registration centres.

Place of registration

Registration of the child shall be at either:

1. A school attended by the child; or any location designated by NIA as a Registration Centre.

   1. The Birth Certificate of the child to be registered (no photocopies accepted)
   2. The valid Passport of the child to be registered

Residential Address:

1. Village/ Town
2. House Number
3. Postal Address
4. Digital Address
5. Telephone number

Who qualifies to fill the form on the child’s behalf? Who is permitted to complete a child’s Application Form?

The persons permitted to complete a child’s Application Form are: 

1. Biological parent of the child; or
2. Sibling of 18 years and above of the child; or
3. Legal Guardian of the child; or
4. A relative of the child namely a grandparent, an uncle or an aunt; or
5. A Social Welfare Officer responsible for the child’ wellbeing.
6. The parent name and information shall be captured at the Next-of-Kin Section

The parent/relative/legal guardian/Social Welfare Officer of the child to be registered shall be required to bring their Ghana Card to a Registration Centre.

Who can vouch? Who qualifies to vouch for the child? Who is permitted to vouch for the child?

Only the following persons are permitted to vouch for a child who does not possess a Birth Certificate or a valid passport:

1. The biological parent of a child;
2. The Legal Guardian of a child;
3. A relative of a child being the child’s uncle, aunt, grandparent or sibling of 18 years and above.
4. Where the child has no known relatives, two (2) Social Welfare Officers, Assembly Members, Chiefs.
