Over GH¢240 million released for the payment of Teacher Trainees’ Allowances

The Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has announced that the central government has allocated approximately GH¢241.9 million cedis to support teacher education by disbursing payments for teacher trainee allowances.
This significant financial commitment was revealed during the 14th Graduation ceremony of Saint Monica’s College of Education in Asante Mampong, where Professor Yahyra Dzakadzi, the Director of Tertiary Education at the Ministry of Education, delivered the speech on behalf of the Education Minister.
Furthermore, Dr. Adutwum highlighted that an additional amount of GH¢32.4 million has been released to cover Books and Research Allowances for eligible senior members of public Tertiary Education Institutions, including Colleges of Education, for the upcoming 2022/2023 Academic Year.
The announcement of the teacher trainee allowance disbursement was initially hinted at by Dr. Adutwum during the 14th Congregation ceremony held for the first batch of degree holders in the Basic Education Programme at Sefwi Wiawso College of Education.
In a speech read on his behalf at the event, he assured that teacher trainee allowances for the 2022/23 academic year would soon be deposited into the accounts of the 49 colleges of education across the country.
The official speech stated, “The government, through the Ministry of Education, has approved a total of Two Hundred and Forty-One Million, Nine Hundred and Thirteen Thousand Cedis (241,913,000 Cedis) for the payment of 2022/2023 teacher trainee allowances.”
In a related development, Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia affirmed that the teacher trainee allowance provided to students in public teacher training colleges would be a permanent fixture under the administration of President Nana Akufo-Addo.
During a meeting with the leadership of the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana (TTAG), Dr. Bawumia assured them by stating, “The teacher trainee allowance will be permanent under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s government.”
Expressing their gratitude to Dr. Bawumia, the TTAG leadership acknowledged that the restoration of the trainee allowance has significantly supported numerous students in public teacher training colleges. They regarded the government’s intervention as an “unforgettable legacy.”
