Paul O’Grady Biography
Paul James O’Grady MBE DL was a comedian, presenter, drag queen, actor, and writer from England.
He rose to prominence in the London LGBT scene in the 1980s with his drag identity Lily Savage, through which he earned wider recognition in the 1990s.
O’Grady then discarded the role and became the host of several television and radio shows, notably The Paul O’Grady Show, in the 2000s.
O’Grady arrived in London in the late 1970s, originally working as a peripatetic care officer for Camden Council.
He created his drag act in 1978, basing the character of Lily Savage on female relatives. After touring England with drag mime pair the Playgirls, O’Grady went solo as a stand-up comedian in the early 1980s.
In the 2008 Birthday Honours, O’Grady was named a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to entertainment.
In 2020, he succeeded Roy Hudd as president of the British Music Hall Society. He was a Deputy Lieutenant for the County of Kent, where he had lived for many years.
