Politics should not revolve around distribution of money in exchange for votes; it should be about development- James Gyakye Quayson
The Member of Parliament for the Assin North constituency, Hon James Gyakye Quayson
James Gyakye Quayson, who has been re-elected as the Member of Parliament for the Assin North constituency in the recent by-election, expressed criticism towards the governing New Patriotic Party following his victory.
In the by-election held on June 27, 2023, Mr. Quayson garnered 17,245 votes, which accounted for 57.56 percent of the total votes cast. This enabled him to surpass Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG).
Charles Opoku secured 12,630 votes, constituting 42.15 percent of the total votes in the fiercely contested by-election. Meanwhile, Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the LPG received a meager 87 votes, representing 0.29 percent.
Speaking about his victory, Mr. Quayson emphasized that it was not only a personal triumph but also a triumph for the people of Assin North and, indeed, for the people of Ghana.
He expressed hope that one day the country would pursue a just and righteous path. Mr. Quayson stated, “Politics should not revolve around the distribution of money to citizens in exchange for votes; it should be about development. Democracy is about progress.”
He assured his constituents that they would receive their fair share of the national resources. Mr. Quayson pledged to ensure that the people he represents receive equitable portions of the national cake and that their communities are developed.
While acknowledging the court’s ruling against him, Mr. Quayson mentioned that despite the perceived injustice, he still believes in upholding the rule of law. He affirmed his commitment to conducting himself in accordance with legal principles.
The MP-elect expressed gratitude for the support he received from his constituents, as well as from his party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and even individuals within the New Patriotic Party who backed him. He acknowledged the now-known election results and expressed his willingness to work with them.
