President Akufo-Addo commissions four security vessels for Ghana Navy

His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana has commissioned four security vessels for Ghana Navy.

The President, has on on Friday, 25th February, 2022 commissioned four (4) vessels acquired for use by the Ghana Navy.

The four (4) vessels commissioned include;

1. Ghana Navy Ship Volta P40

2. Ghana Navy Ship Densu P41

3. Ghana Navy Ship Pra P42 and

4. Ghana Navy Ship Ankobra P43

In addressing the gathering at the a short and coulorful ceremony to officially unviel the project, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said, this is yet a further manifestation of the commitment of his New Patriotic Party Government to retool and re-equip the Ghana Armed Forces to enable them perform their duty of protecting the territorial integrity of our nation.

He again disclosed that, in addition to these four ships being commissioned, Government is in the process of acquiring two (2) offshore patrol vessels with high endurance limits, to maintain constant presence at sea.

The President also noted that, Government will also procure some more patrol vessels to respond to the myriad of threats along the coastline.

According to him, financing for the acquisition of these ships has been already provided for in the security sector retooling programme, initiated by his Government

Main engines specifications of the vessels

Providing detailed information on the vessels, it has been announced that, the vessels are fitted with three caterpillar C32 main engines developing 1.450Hp and providing a maximum speed of 28 knots.

The four (4) security vessels for the Ghana Navy have a range of 2, 800Nm at 25Knots and endurance of 30 days.

Explaining further, the President said, the vessels are also fitted with external fire fighting monitor with remote clutch and control, all round wheelhouse ballistic protection, 2 x 12.7 mm machine guns mounted forward for each vessel.

Technical specifications of the vessels

Technical specifications of the vessels include a length overall of 40.00m, breadth mould of 7.60m, depth mould of 3.65m, loaded draft of 1.89m, fuel capacity of 86,000ltrs, fresh water tank capacity of 30, 000ltrs and a gross tonnage of 279 metric tonnes.

Since Ghana discovered oil, this is the first time Ghana has acquired its security vessels to provide security for its oil and gas activities and maritime activities. Previously, private vessels were hired.
