President Akufo-Addo urges speedy approval of Justice Torkonoo as new Chief Justice

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to expedite the approval of Justice Gertrude Torkonoo as the new Chief Justice to prevent a leadership vacuum in the judiciary. Justice Torkonoo was nominated by the President to replace Justice Kwasi Anin Yeboah, who is set to retire from the position on May 24, 2021.

In a letter to the Speaker, the President emphasized the importance of a speedy approval process to enable Justice Torkonoo to assume her role as soon as possible. If approved by Parliament, Justice Torkonoo, who has served on the Supreme Court for four years and in the Judiciary for nineteen years, will become the third female Chief Justice in Ghana’s history.

President Akufo-Addo’s nomination of Justice Torkonoo marks his third appointment to the position of Chief Justice since he assumed office in January 2017. Justice Torkonoo’s appointment holds much significance, as it will bring much-needed diversity to the leadership of the judiciary.

The President’s call for a quick approval process is commendable, as it will prevent a leadership vacuum in the judiciary and ensure the smooth transition of power from Justice Anin Yeboah to Justice Torkonoo. The Judiciary plays a crucial role in the governance of the country, and a smooth transition will maintain the integrity and credibility of the judicial system.
