Reasons every teacher must attend Professional Development workshop

INTRODUCTION

Many Ghananian teachers have expressed reservations over recommended training workshop approved by the National Teaching Council (NTC) in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES) among other stakeholders, as a means of improving their professionalism in the teaching fraternity.

Coverghana.com.gh preliminary investigations and engagements with teachers across board suggest that, a greater number of teachers have little information and education on the current modules designed by NTC for GES staff.

These, according to our findings are a few among many reasons some teachers do not show key interest in the training workshop forgetting its importance.

Information available confirmed that, with the fast growing educational system, there is a need for every teacher to acquire new and relevant skills, up-to-date pedagogical and subject content knowledge to fully equip him/her for effective and smooth teaching and learning.

LICENSING OF TEACHERS

The establishment of National Teaching Council (NTC) by the Education Act 2008 (ACT 778), as detailed out in the Education Regulatory Bodies Act 2020 (Act 1023), which also cover other regulatory bodies, the council is mandated to license teachers in Ghana.

AFTER LICENSING, WHAT NEXT?

According to NTC, the license is valid for 3 years within which the teacher should work towards renewal by accruing credit points. After receiving the license, the teacher must observe 3 domains in the Teachers’ Standards. These are;

1. Professional Values and Attitude

2.  Professional Knowledge

3. Professional Practice

CPD FRAMEWORK AND POINT BUILDING SYSTEM

Professional Development (PD) is an integral component of teacher
professionalism that enables teachers to keep up with relevant and up-to-date pedagogical and subject content knowledge.

PD has the potential to equip teachers with skills and competencies that will make them versatile individuals capable of delivering education in ways that facilitate the achievements of national goals and aspirations.

Professional Development is a systematic and sustained process by which a teacher maintains, improves and expands their professional knowledge, values and skills.

RATIONALE FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES

The rationale of Professional Development (PD) is to provide opportunities for teachers to continue to improve their competencies to maintain the integrity of the teaching profession and improve their professional status.

It is envisaged that going through the listed accredited PD activities would help maintain and enhance knowledge, skills, attitudes and experiences gained after initial training.

It is essential for teachers as professionals to preserve their professional integrity by updating their knowledge and skills to keep them abreast of contemporary issues and approaches in education.

DURATION OF THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (PD) PROGRAMME

Professional Development (PD) programmes run for a cycle of 3 years. This implies that every registered teacher has 3 years to earn the minimum credit points stipulated for his/her level/rank.

This rule applies to teachers at all levels of the education system, both public and private sectors including holders of administrative positions.

DOCUMENTATION OF TEACHERS CREDIT POINTS

Teacher training logbooks have been developed to document teachers’ training records and related Professional Development (PD) credit points. Where the means of documenting the activities are not immediately available or there is no designated person to verify the activities, it is the responsibility of the teacher to save evidence (registration, certificate and attendance records) of the activities for submission at the appropriate time and place as may be directed by NTC.

WHERE TO KEEP PORTFOLIO RECORDS

In addition to the Professional Development programmes attended, teachers are required to upload their portfolio records onto the portal for assessment.

MODE OF TCPD ACTIVITIES

NTC has Certified Service Providers such as GIM School and Educational Consultancy to organize recommended training workshop for teachers.

TCPD activities can be accessed from supply-driven or demand-driven sources depending on the availability of such activities.

Teachers are not restricted to access training from only one source and are also not obliged to access every paid Professional Development activity.

Demand-driven programmes are those by Certified Service Providers like GIM School and Educational Consultancy.

WHO ARE NTC SERVICE PROVIDER?

Service Providers are individuals or organisations whose training contents have been approved by NTC as relevant for teachers. Example of Service Provider is GIM School and Educational Consultancy

PAYMENT FOR NTC TRAINING WORKSHOP FOR CREDIT POINTS

Teachers in most cases are required to pay for such training programmes out of their Professional Development Allowance. In such situations, teachers have the right to negotiate for their own payments and decide on which to attend.

COMPONENTS OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PD

The Professional Development Programme covers annual conferences of registered teachers, workshops, seminars, and training on curricular knowledge, School Based INSET (SBI), Cluster Based INSET (CBI) and Departmental Based INSET (DBI) as well as other training programmes approved by the NTC. Teachers must access these programmes at institutions certified by NTC.

HOW WILL THE TRAINING WORKSHOP BE ORGANIZED FOR TEACHERS?

Coverghana.com.gh has randomly engaged a section of teachers on the upcoming recommended training workshop designed for teachers towards their professionalism. The teachers, though have welcomed the training workshop, but swiftly called on the NTC Certified Service Provider, GIM School and Educational Consultancy to provide a detailed schedules for the workshop.

According to GIM School and Educational Consultancy, they are scheduled to conduct the training workshop for teachers in the three Tongu Districts (North Tongu, South Tongu and Central Tongu) and Kpando Municipal before December, 2021 ends.

The Service Provider has already conducted the training workshop for teachers in North Tongu District. Engagement with teachers who participated in the training workshop show that, it’s very important for every Ghanaian teacher to attend the NTC recommended training workshop designed for teachers.

Information available confirmed that, GIM School and Educational Consultancy will organize same workshop for teachers in South Tongu District on Thursday, 16th December, 2021 at Sogakope Senior High School (SOGASCO)

We also had information that, same workshop will be organized on Saturday, 18th December, 2021 for teachers in Central Tongu District at Adidome Senior High School (ADISEC).

Cross-ranked teachers ranging between Newly Qualified (NQT) and Deputy Directors from the North Tongu District have alleyed their reservations and apathy after attending the GIM organized workshop. This they credit to GIM because of the professional manner in which the content was delivered, the quality of the course materials and certificates which were both delivered to participants right after the workshop.

All GES staff are entreated to attend the training workshop to help them update their knowledge on;

1. The CPD framework
2. The all popular but yet obscure teacher lincensing and
3. Teacher promotion procedure within the new policy
