The Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference (CCBC) has issued a press release on the spate of violence during the Current Voter’s Registration Exercise being conducted by the Electoral Commission of Ghana.
According to the conference of Catholic Bishops, they have taken note of chronicle of politically orchestrated violence in the Ejura-Sekyere Odumase Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Kasoa in the Central Region, Asutifi South and Tano South Constituencies in the Ahato Kegion, the Dormaa West Constituency in the Bono Region, Ho West in the Volta Region and Fadama, New Town in the Greater Accra Region and the latest action of the Special Development Initiatives Minister and Member of Parliament for the Awutu-senya East Constituency in the Central Region, Mrs. Mavis Hawa Koomson, is very disturbing.
The statement from the bishops also added that while the police take action on Hon. Hawa Koomson’s action, it is their hope that the appropriate sanctions will be taken against her by the EXecutive and the Legislative arms if Government.
The Catholic Bishops Conference also reminded all Political Parties particularly the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of the agreement they signed against vigilantism and restrain their members from engaging in acts of violence in the name of politics and that Political Parties should show their commitment to the agreement by handing over to the Police any member of their group who misconduct themselves or act in ways that will disrupt the registration exercise.
