Retired GES director calls for review of wholesale admission into second cycle schools

The wholesale admission of students into second-cycle schools has been identified as a major contributor to declining academic performance and indiscipline in these schools.
This was highlighted by Mr. Edward Kweku Azure, the immediate past retired Upper East Regional Director of the Ghana Education Service (GES), during a send-off party organized in his honor.
Mr. Azure, who served as the Regional Director from August 2020 until his retirement in November 2022, noted that some students who performed poorly in the Basic Education Certificate Examination were admitted into second-cycle schools, leading to negative attitudes and poor performance.
He urged teachers to enhance their skills with modern teaching techniques, and also called for the participation of major stakeholders, including education administrators, teachers, parents, traditional authorities, community members and students, in addressing the falling standards of education.
The current Upper East Regional Director of the GES, Mr. Bright Lawoe, commended Mr. Azure for his contribution to improving educational standards in the region and stated that reforms were being undertaken to address the challenges.
The GES is also planning an education fair to bring major stakeholders together to deliberate on strategies to improve educational standards.
