The Ghanaian Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has announced the commencement of the distribution process for the first batch of 450,000 free tablets under the Smart School Project, which have been fully funded by the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), are set to be delivered to students this week.

In line with the government’s “digitization agenda” for all sectors across the country, the Smart School Project aims to provide 1.3 million tablets to specified schools nationwide. To ensure an efficient distribution, the process has been carefully organized into three phases.

Dr. Adutwum, speaking in an interview with JoyNews, revealed that the initial phase will cover 32 schools across all 16 regions of Ghana. The tablets will be deployed to these schools within the coming week.

He also stated that, a robust monitoring system has been put in place to track the distribution process and ensure its effectiveness.

Once the tablets are delivered to the first 32 schools, the second phase will commence within a week or two, expanding the distribution to additional schools, He added.

Addressing concerns about the project’s budget allocation, Dr. Adutwum clarified that the investment in tablets should not be considered a “misplaced priority.” He emphasized that the allocated funds for the tablet project under the government’s digitalization agenda cannot be diverted to address logistical challenges faced by the Free SHS (Senior High School) program, such as feeding issues.

Contrary to misconceptions, the cost of each tablet device is $250, not GHS250. Consequently, the first batch of 450,000 tablets will amount to a total cost of $112.5 million. He added
