South Tongu Health Directorate directs the public for collection of bodies at Comboni mortuary, Sogakope

Management of the South Tongu Health Directorate, Sogakope has taken a bold decision to direct the general public for collection of bodies at Richard Novati Catholic Hospital (Comboni) mortuary after an emergency meeting held on Thursday, 12th October, 2023.

According to the South Tongu Health Directorate, the decision was taken following the Akosombo Dam Spillage which affected major communities including Sogakope in the South Tongu District of the Volta region.

This information was confirmed by Mr. Bismark Hottordze, the Administrator for the Health Directorate on behalf of the Director while speaking to Freedom 88.1 FM in Sogakope.

Currently, the Sogakope Substation which supplies electricity/power to the Richard Novati Catholic Hospital (Comboni) and the mortuary has been shutdown by GRIDCo and ECG following the spillage.

The surroundings of the Richard Novati Catholic Hospital (Comboni) and the mortuary were flooded, including the Comboni Technical Vocational Institute (COMBOTEC), Comboni RC and nearby communities.

According to Mr. Bismark Hottordze, over 225 bodies at the Richard Novati Catholic Hospital (Comboni) mortuary may be affected if the situation persists.  The Directorate also advise the affected families to consider a mortuary at higher grounds to deposits the bodies.

In the meantime, ECG and GRIDCo are temporarily supplying power from a sister substation to Sogakope township and its surrounding. Even with this, the power is unstable.

The situation at hand has pushed the South Tongu Health Directorate to make such decision by calling on the public to collect their bodies at the mortuary.
