Speaker of parliament’s SIM card has been deactivated – Sam George reveals

The Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Sam George, has raised concerns over the ongoing SIM card registration exercise in Ghana.
According to him, the official SIM card of the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has been deactivated despite undergoing the registration process.
The government had set a deadline of May 31, 2023, for the registration of all SIM cards in the country. Telecommunication companies were instructed to deactivate all unregistered SIM cards after the deadline.
Speaking on the issue, Sam George expressed his disappointment with the process, highlighting the need for the Minister of Communications, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, to address concerns raised by the public.
“It is important that the Minister appears before us to answer questions, if possible, even today because people’s livelihoods have been affected and people’s mobile money has been stuck due to the disconnection,” he said.
Sam George also called for the National Identification Authority to provide Ghanaians with the Ghana Card, which could be used for SIM card registration.
He added, “We are insisting that the National Identification Authority provides us with the Ghana Card so we can register our SIM cards. My SIM card was disconnected as well.”
The Minister of Communications is scheduled to appear before Parliament on Thursday, June 8, 2023, to apprise legislators on the ongoing SIM card registration exercise. It remains to be seen what steps will be taken to address the concerns raised by Sam George and other Ghanaians.
