Strike by teacher unions is unnecessary and needless – NLC

The Executive Secretary of the National Labour Commission (NLC), Ofosu Asamoah, strongly criticized the ongoing strike by labour unions in the educational sector, dismissing it as unnecessary and lacking merit.
The strike initiated by the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana, Federation of Universities Senior Staff (FUSSAG), Teachers and Educational Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU), and the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA), is a response to the government’s failure to address various pressing concerns affecting the unions.
Among the issues raised by the unions are the employer’s failure to address their welfare needs, such as tier-two pension funds, vehicle maintenance allowance, and overtime allowance.

Speaking in an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM with Umaru Sanda Amadu, Mr. Ofosu expressed his disappointment with the labor unions’ decision to go on strike despite ongoing negotiations with the Commission.
“There was an agreement between the parties involved. You leave the commission and declare a strike, and others join in. You have presented your concerns, and they have been addressed, so why go on strike? Why choose to strike when your issues have been resolved? Why do you want to be on strike when the remaining unresolved issues are being addressed by yourself?” Mr. Ofosu questioned.
He further described the labor unions’ actions as unwarranted and illegal.
“It’s an unfortunate situation. It seems like the strike is being misused as a tool. I fail to understand the basis on which they declared the strike and closed all universities. It’s as if they just want to shut them down for the sake of it. Their strike lacks merit and is unnecessary,” he emphasized.
Mr. Asamoah insisted that, based on his experience, knowledge, and understanding of the law as the Executive Secretary of the NLC, the strike is unlawful.
