As the Student Representative Council (SRC) election draws closer, one of the candidates named Vincent Kojo Siabi who happens to be the current Atlantic Hall JCRC President of the University of Cape Coast has taken a stand against a proposal to make students pay for utility bills.
The proposal was made by the university vetting committee on behalf of management, citing the huge bills to pay in the academic and residential areas.
The vetting committee chairman argued that students are already using utilities and not paying for them, and they can no longer cushion the students by paying for their usage since government’s subvention stops coming or delay.
However, Team SK, one of the candidates vying for the SRC President position, vehemently opposed the proposal.
They pointed out that a considerable number of students are already facing financial hardship and are struggling to meet their basic needs, such as daily meals and academic materials.
Charging utility bills on top of existing financial burdens would be an added strain, making it even more challenging for students to afford their school fees.
“Our fellow students are already facing economic difficulties. Asking them to pay utility bills would only exacerbate their financial situation and could potentially prevent some from continuing their education,” argued by Team SK.
Amidst the ongoing financial crisis in the country, Team SK urged the university management to reconsider the proposal and empathize with the students’ plight.
They proposed an alternative approach, suggesting that the university should promote responsible energy use and conservation instead.
By educating students about judicious use of utilities, the university can potentially reduce expenses without imposing additional financial strain on the students.
“We believe that collaboration and prudent resource management are key to addressing the financial challenges faced by the university without sacrificing the well-being and academic pursuits of our students,” said Team SK.
