Teachers are conniving with students to cheat in examination-Former President John Dramani Mahama

John Dramani Mahama, the Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has cast doubt on the credibility of the recent West Africa Senior Schools Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results alleging that some teachers are colluding with students to cheat during exams.

Mahama’s comments come in response to the announcement by Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum that this year’s results are the best since 2015.

Highlighting the issue of lax invigilation, Mahama expressed concern over the relaxed approach of some invigilators, allowing teachers to assist students in answering questions.

He warned that the consequences of such actions would manifest in the future, ultimately affecting the integrity of the country’s educational system.

The former President, who is currently on the “Building Ghana Tour,” believes that certifying students based on these compromised standards may lead to challenges when those students use their certificates to gain admission to foreign schools.

Meanwhile, as part of the NDC’s manifesto development process, various professional and economic groups have been invited to share the challenges within their respective sectors. Teachers have been prominently featured during these engagements across the six regions visited.

At the Mfantseman constituency, the lack of textbooks following the curriculum change emerged as a major concern. Mahama empathized with the teachers and expressed the NDC’s commitment to addressing the issue if they win the 2024 election.

Expressing his dissatisfaction with the state of the education system, Mahama emphasized the need for textbooks to accompany curriculum changes and criticized the government for the perceived neglect. Improving the educational sector remains a priority for the NDC, with a proposed government investment in a housing scheme for teachers being one of the key policies put forward by the party.
